There is a plot against me and my kind going on in the packaging industry. My kind, refers to anyone with hands that are not as flexible as they used to be. Well hey, let's not nit-pick, how about anyone with hands? Have you tried to open a package of batteries recently, or even one of those plasticky post office mailer things, using your hands? It's a real good way to rise your blood pressure if you happen to be low like me. I ended throwing the thing down and went for the scissors which ended up not being such a great idea because in the case of the batteries I punctured my thumb and still didn't get the damn thing opened.
And those are just two of the more obvious packaging foils, how about; milk containers you have to pull apart, inner seals you have to peel off, clothing tags you have to pick at or rip off hopefully not leaving a hole in the garment because getting the scissors is too much work.
The good people at Consumer Reports must have gotten a lot of cranky mail about packaging problems since they have given out an Oyster Award for the best of the hardest packages to open. Unless you subscribe you can't read the whole article, but they do go into the pros and cons of packaging, (which makes some sense) as well as tell about some tiny steps huge companies are doing to make packaging more environmentally friendly.
AND THE WINNERS ARE:
- The Clamshell, that ubiquitous packaging style that foils even the most persistent of us.
- CD/Disk/Game Packaging, good one, they are a bitch even when they are just shrink wrapped.
- Pills in blister packs, oh yeah, if Pepper didn't have such bad allergies I wouldn't know about these little buggers.
- Cereal boxes with the plastic bags. It wasn't so much the difficulty opening the bag, but force it took sent the cereal flying everywhere.
